Neurodiverse Clay Workshop (NDIS)

$110.00

What would it look like to include 60-90-minute pottery sessions in your NDIS plan?

I’m passionate about sharing the experience of clay with others. I’m now offering private sessions for neurodiverse children and adults from my beautiful home studio in Aldinga Beach.

Learning the process of pottery, or maybe more accurately ‘playing with clay’, builds capacity in the following ways:

  • Increasing social and community participation

  • Broadening relationships

  • Improving mental, physical and emotional well-being

I teach the basics of working with clay, either on the wheel or hand building. This includes clay preparation, making a form with wet clay and trimming and decorating with carving or sculpture once the form is leather hard.

I then fire and glaze and fire the pieces again to produce a finished product that can be enjoyed at home or grifted to someone special. There may be opportunity to be involved in the glazing and firing process depending on the day.

I recommend that people engage in 4-5 sessions of 60-90 minutes to experience the whole process once. Less sessions are possible, but the experience will only be part of the process.

Although people will walk away with at least one finished form, the focus is the process rather than the final product.

Working with clay has a way of calming and grounding us. It brings our minds into the present moment. It’s tactile, slow paced, playful and gloriously messy. What better excuse to play in mud!

It’s a humbling experience to learn an ancient art form. It’s one of the oldest human inventions, dating back to the Neolithic period! We can learn (yes, I’m still learning all the time!) a process that takes us back to a slow pace in an age of speed. Through the nature of clay, it’s earthiness and susceptibility to many variables, we also learn the art of letting go. We let go of perfectionism and embrace the joy of making with our hands.

Please get in touch with your NDIS service provider or plan manager to see if this is something that you can include in your plan.

See you in the mud! :)
